Holiday Decoration and the Amazing Growing Dog

{Scott}

True, it's been months since I've posted without a "Nicky &", but here it is.

Speaking of Nicky, she's preparing Christmas cards right now, and they turned out exceptionally well, so look for those. I'd spoil them, but that would...spoil it.

My four-day weekend is coming to an end, and it was quite a busy one. We (mostly Nicky) spent a good portion of the last few days decorating the house for the holidays. We'll be going with a live tree this year (my first ever, but far from her first). Apparently if you keep a live tree around the house for a month, it dries out and becomes a fire hazard (who knew?), so that won't come home for a couple more weeks. Instead, and to fill the gap until then, we put up out four-footer upstairs. I've begun referring (in my head, at least) to it as the "Accident Tree", since the section of hall beside it gets about as much traffic as the Autobahn, and, when Dixie's in full pursuit of the cats, the speed is about the same.

The "First Christmas" ornament is hanging from the little tree as well, and it's pretty appropriate. Even though this is technically our third Christmas, it's in many ways out first real Christmas together. 2005 was a whirlwind, since we were moving less than two weeks later, and last year I was in Dubai. It won't be easy being so far away from the rest of the families this year, but it is an opportunity to lay down our own new traditions.

The other half of the title: I wasn't around for Dixie's puppyhood, but Nicky was and has told many tales of a cautious, uncertain puppy who would bark herself hoarse at night. So, when we got Jackson, that's what I expected. We're both learning, though, that like different children, different dogs grow up differently. I weighed Jackson on our bathroom scale yesterday, and he came in at 8.4 pounds. That means that in the week since he came home, he's put on almost two pounds, and is really starting to fill out. His Shar-Pei skin on his legs has smoothed out, and although the picture doesn't really do it justice, he really looks larger. He's also opened up quite a bit, and is just about fearless. He's even gone nose-to-nose with both cats. Dixie has also really taken to him; they play together for hours a day.

Two movies rounded out the weekend, Enchanted and Hitman. I know I've been promising it off and on for months, but I will review them.

That's all from Virginia Beach for now. Happy Monday!

Homecoming

{Scott & Nicky}

Our new boy is home! It's been a good afternoon, but we're all kind of tired, so this blog will be short. Just a quick few pictures to give you a glimpse!

The Gift That Kept On Giving.

{Nicky}

Well. Mystery solved. Yesterday, Scott and I finally discovered the source of the chirping!

When I worked at Mayo, we once had a fire drill during which I was overlooked while working in a back room. So when I quit Mayo a couple years ago, as a gag gift, my co-workers gave me a smoke detector.

Apparently, I had tossed that detector into a laundry basket that had become a temporary "stuff" collector in our laundry room. In the time that followed, it got covered by something, which got covered by something else, and so on. So when the battery in it got low, and the warning chirp began, we never thought to look for that detector!

Last night, at the end of our patience (well, I was. Scott has unending patience.), we unloaded the whole laundry room (which, in it's defense, needed to be cleaned out anyway) and as Scott had his head in another awkward angle, trying to see around the back of the water heater, we both heard the chirp now out in the hall--right where we had put the laundry basket. It didn't take long to find the culprit. Scott pulled the battery out, tossed it to me, and said, "This is dead." Funny man! So, if any of my Mayo cohorts ever drop by to read this, rest assured that your gift went beyond expectations!

The Gifford Household Drama has come to a (temporary) close.

Meanwhile, we're just doing Fall things to get ready for the cooler weather. Tired of finding spiders, and other things that have too many legs in our house, as the temperatures drop, we called in Terminex today to start spraying. I am also cleaning the oven right now, so it's ready for all the baking next week for Thanksgiving. (I can't believe it's only a week away!)

And of course, we're pretty set for Jackson to come home. Scott was able to secure Friday off, so we'll head down to North Carolina to pick him up at lunch time, home in the afternoon, so that we can introduce Dixie to her new brother while it's still light out, maybe spend some quality time in the backyard.

Nothing else for the moment. But don't worry, we'll keep you posted on all the exciting details as they occur! ;-)

...passing time...

{Nicky}

For all you loyal Beach Giffords' blog readers, sorry for the lack of posts. Not much going on around here...Scott's at sea, the smoke detector remains elusive, and Dixie, the cats and I are just passing time.

Scott comes home at the end of this week, and we'll be bringing Jackson home at the end of next week...so it's coming up! The boy has made out like a bandit with his spoils for homecoming thus far, and he's not even here! Dixie is getting quite a little 'gift pile' established, too, as she is the first baby, and we don't want her to feel left out!

I went and saw "Martian Child" today. It was a good movie--I'll save the reviews for Scott, but I enjoyed it a lot. Laughed and cried.

Other than that...not much.

Sending warm wishes to our loved ones up North!

WHERE IN THE H-E-DOUBLE-HOCKEY-STICKS IS THAT NOISE COMING FROM??

{Nicky}

About two weeks ago, Scott and I started hearing a "chirping" around the house...it wasn't consistent, just every now and again, enough to annoy Dixie in her search for the source, and to let us know that somewhere, a battery in a smoke detector needed to be changed.

Up for the challenge, we purchased the necessary 9 volt batteries. On the drive home, we began to ponder how odd it was that we have only ONE smoke detector in our house that we are aware of.

Fast forward to two nights ago. Scott went to the top of the stairs to put the new battery in the alarm, and as he was up there, I heard the chirping downstairs as I walked by the laundry room. So I wasn't too surprised when Scott called down that the detector upstairs wasn't even battery operated--it was hooked up through wiring. (However, it did have writing on the side saying that it needed to be replaced by 2005. We moved in January of 2006! Whoops! Someone dropped the ball there...) Scott brought the batteries downstairs, and thus began The Great Hunt For The Chirp. We pulled out all the shi--um, stuff from our laundry room and looked behind the (stacked) washer/dryer, and we could NOT find the alarm anywhere. ANYWHERE. And the chirping still wasn't consistent, so it was hard to anticipate when the next one would come. We spent too long looking for the damned thing, with no success. We had to call of the search finally to head to bed.

Today I am working at the computer, and the chirp is going off every few minutes, and I am close to screaming. I have NO idea where the alarm is, but I'm beginning to worry that it's somewhere unreachable. You see, the old owners re-vented the laundry room, and in doing so, put up a new ceiling, a little lower than the old one, and I am becoming convinced that is where the chirping smoke detector now is! I don't know. Wherever it is, it is certainly unattainable right now, and all it is doing is serving to drive me and Dixie crazy.

Scott's supposed to be underway right now, but Hurricane Noel has messed up the ship's traveling schedule, so he's on his way home for the evening...I'm worried our time together is going to be sucked up as The Great Hunt continues...

WHERE IS THAT @&%!*# NOISE COMING FROM!!??!!
(and yes, Mom, we got a new alarm to replace the expired one! :-)
